Overwatch was origionally a 6v6 pvp game that was later changed to 5v5 with the introduction of Overwatch 2 that is owned and created by blizzard entertainment ©. it was released to the public on May 3, 2016 and Overwatch 2 was released on October 4, 2022, while it did have a rough start though due to two DDOS attacks on the day of release causing many people to not be able to play until two days later. To be honest though I personally think that the servers were just massively overwhelmed due to them not expecting the massive flood of players on the day of release due to it being free unlike overwatch 1. However though the release of overwatch 2 got huge backlash from people hating the new credit system, the bugs, and the replacment of loot boxes, which was arguably one of the best loot systems to exist for a game of its style, with a battlepass.
